Sustainability &
Corporate Social Responsibility
Responsible Management is core to our brand DNA. Our strategy encourages inclusive economic development. Our voluntary alignment with international and regional guidelines such as UN 17 SDGs, the 10 principles of UN Global Compact, GRI Standards, IIRC (International Integrated Reporting Council) frameworks, SIDS (Small Islands Developing States) and the S.A.M.O.A Pathway, enable us to go beyond commitment to all the relevant national legislations and to contribute to overall progress of humanity. TLC manages all the hotels of Lux Island Resorts Ltd; a Company listed on the Mauritian Stock Exchange Market and the first hospitality group listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius Sustainability Index. We are part of the GRI Gold Community.
UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Our strategy is designed to align with the 17 UN SDGs. Through stakeholder inclusiveness and key partnerships, we have been mapping all 17 simultaneously. The goals are ambitious and optimistic; so are we. We bring our support to the communities in every destination where we operate, and the causes we support range from inclusive community development, healthcare, poverty reduction, to environmental projects such as endemic biodiversity conservation. Most importantly, we put good governance and sustainability at the core of our strategy.
UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT
We ensure at the very core of decision-making, that we adhere to the four pillars of the United Nations Global Compact, operating in ways that, at a minimum, meet fundamental responsibilities in the areas of Human Rights, Labor, Environment and Anti-corruption. As a signatory, we align with the ten principles of the UN Global Compact, by supporting and ensuring the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights. We encourage freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining, and uphold the elimination of forced or compulsory labor. We banish discrimination in respect of employment and occupation, and support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges. We undertake initiatives that promote greater environmental responsibility and adopt environmentally friendly technologies. We work against all forms of corruption, including extortion and bribery. We achieve this through implementation of robust policies, training and feedback mechanisms.
RAY OF LIGHT
Ray of Light engages the community & other stakeholders in multiple projects aimed at uplifting those suffering from various types of marginalization. We collaborate with NGOs dedicated to offering quality education to children coming from disadvantaged households, healthcare to the needy, support for gender equality through women and girls’ empowerment, advising and guiding the disabled towards self-reliance, through sports or IT projects.
TREAD LIGHTLY
Tread Lightly, our environmental signature project is recognised locally and internationally as an umbrella for Climate Change mitigation and adaptation initiatives, including renewable energy and biodiversity conservation projects. Tread Lightly covers the following SDGs: 7; 9; 11; 12; 13; 14; 15 and 17. We promise our guests a 100% carbon free stay for a voluntary participation of 1 Euro per night. Tread Lightly has exceeded the millionth participating guest night and 97,000 TCO2 of offset GHG via UNFCCC registered projects. We have already implemented an initial pilot Solar PV project in Mauritius at Ile Des Deux Cocos, which is contributing towards diesel use reduction and emissions. We are implementing a Solar PV project of at least 500MWp in the Maldives for a lighter footprint.
BUSINESS AMBITION FOR 1.5°C
We have never limited ourselves to our sector when it comes to sustainability and we continue to inspire by being the only group with a notable presence in Mauritius, Maldives and Reunion Island (SIDS) to have committed to the 1.5°C campaign of the science-based targets initiative. Climate Action is crucial for the health of populations and destinations. This has always been a priority for our business, we have for years involved the group in carbon footprint calculation and offsetting with the highest available international standards. In a message unveiled by the UN Global Compact in May 2020 for its #BuildBackBetter campaign, Paul Jones, the CEO of The Lux Collective, joined 154 other global business leaders to encourage synchronicity between public and private sector to unite for a sustainable recovery from the pandemic’s economic impact.
INTEGRITY AND TRANSPARENCY
As we publish our fifth consecutive Integrated Annual Report, aligned with GRI Standards and IIRC Framework, we demonstrate in no uncertain terms our unabated dedication, passion and allegiance to absolute transparency in terms of disclosure, Responsibility of Leadership, and the establishment of trustworthy relationships with all our stakeholders. We continually invest in external assurance by accredited auditors to ensure integrity of information. TLC Policies (Sustainability, Environmental, CSR, Child Protection, Purchasing, Equal Opportunity, Human Rights and Health & Safety and LUX* Le Morne No Food Waste Guiding Policy) are enforced by Standard Operating Procedures as well as a hotline to report anonymously any breach. Our long-standing Code of Ethics and Anti-Bribery policies ensure transparency and accountability.
